Double MRO Hangar in Berlin

Width: 2×46 m
Length: 108 m
Inner height: 15,5 m

In October 2022, our biggest project to date was handed over to the client. At Berlin Airport (BER), we built a double MRO hangar with a total area of 9,936 m2. The hangar will be used for the simultaneous maintenance of four Airbus A320 aircraft.

The hangar had to be insulated, due to the required controlled internal temperature during aircraft servicing. The internal height in the facility was important for maneuvering aircraft, as was the appropriate automatic hangar door. The building had to adhere to stringent fire safety standards.

The building is insulated with 120 mm PIR panels. Schwarzmann also prepared project documentation and structural analysis of the building. All technical characteristics of the facility are in accordance with German standards – DIN.

The project was demanding from both technical and organizational points of view. It was necessary to coordinate the various contractors on the construction site and the supervisory authorities while working under strict conditions inside the airport area.

This is the investor’s first hangar outside the UK, with a total project value amounting to €20 million, including infrastructure and specialist servicing equipment. The project will bring new jobs for highly skilled personnel in the field and will be used for more demanding servicing and maintenance work on Airbus aircraft. The hangar will welcome its first aircraft in early 2023.
